Bontan-Ame Gummy Candy
A little story about what this delicious gummy candy is!
It's traditional Japanese sweets, known as wagashi, which are powdery and hard, and are commonly consumed with matcha green tea. When the westerners came to Japan in the 19th century, they brought with them soft candies. The bontan-ame, invented much later in 1924, was one of the earliest Japanese versions of soft candies, or dagashi. It uses pomelo and tangerine juice, combined with glutinous rice, to give a tangy zesty taste. It is wrapped in edible starch paper and the whole candy can be eaten without removing the wrapper. The pineapple version is a newer invention and tastes great too!
